This world is stupid.

I was thinking today about how I'm inelligable to donate blood (goooooo homos! *Cheerleading split-kick*), and I thought instead of being angry about it I could go one better and register to donate bone marrow.

But no, in order to register as a potential bone marrow donor you must fit the Red Cross blood donation criteria. Fucking hell, I'm so pissed off that I can't do something nice for another person (something that, quite frankly, terrifies me) because I like kissing boys.
I mean seriously, take some blood, establish my HLA type, and if a match is found I'll go without sex for four months to clear the detection window; is that really so goddamn hard to do? It could save someones life, idiots.

I'm actually a little curious/surprised about this. I had no idea.
I mean, they scan all blood going in, don't they? So, even if they're afraid of what they consider to be higher-risk contaminated blood, it still gets scanned like all other blood donations, right? And if clear, should be added?
Hrm.
Odd.

That's why I mentioned the detection window.
With HIV there's a period after infection in which it's undetectable in the bloodstream (it's about three months but they say to give it six months to be sure), so the Red Cross don't accept blood from gay men if they've had sex in the previous twelve months; and as the kindly red cross lady (KRCL) said to me "Which would you rather give up?". That's why I figured it'd be a viable plan to determine if I have any possible marrow matches, and if so, abstaining for a few months before donating (provided, of course, that the recipient has four months to twiddle their thumbs).

Anyway, the system is annoying me in general. They bitch and whine that they need more volunteers, but are completely unrealistic and unreasonable in their screening process, even KRCL said their procedures were fucked.

Can't believe they still have that rule. Alex told me about it before, but it's so dodge. I couldn't donate because I'd gone to the dentist in the three months before my appointment.

I suppose they have to cover themselves, but. I mean, if infected blood ever gets through, the Red Cross would be in absolute shit.

And it would mean more gutter journalists would get work, instead of starving to death, and saving the human race from more trouble.

I'm not disputing the screening of samples, and I understand the legal ramifications inherent in any screw-ups on the Red Crosses' (grammar?) part. What does annoy me is that in this situation (bone marrow, not blood) an alternate procedure hasn't been instituted.

Also, stupid hack journalists.
